Tuscany - Castiglion del Bosco
Last week I celebrated a girlfriend's birthday in one of the most beautiful, picturesque places I have had the joy of visiting in Italy. Castiglion del Bosco is a 4,000 acre estate 40km south of Siena, comprising of a castle, a church and a borgo owned by the family of famous Italian fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo. Surrounded by intense natural beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage site Val d'Orcia, Castiglion del Bosco is a private and tranquil hotel and resort for those wanting ultimate luxury yet still an authentic, deep-rooted tuscan lifestyle experience.
The essence of simplicity reigns throughout, from the soft warm tuscan hues used, right down to the food where 180 different types of organic fruits and vegetables are grown on the estate and served in the 2 restaurants. The resort comprises of hotel suites as well as 9 private villas, each one a treasuretrove of antiques and unique pieces handcrafted by local Florentine artists.
In Italy, family is the focus of life. Castiglion del Bosco was created as a place for families to come to spend quality time together in the midst of nature and sophisticated culture. There are woods for trekking, mountain bike riding, enchanting green meadows for nature walks, and private hunting trips with the resident game warden. It has a historic winery and cellar where the grapes all come from their own vineyard producing some of Italy's top wines. And if that's not enough, an 18 hole golf course designed by the winner of the British Open, Tom Weiskopof.
If a trip to Italy is on the cards, be sure to visit Castiglion del Bosco, it truly is worth it, even if your budget only allows for a long lunch or an evening drink. Its heaven on earth!
